The Road To Hell is Paved With Good Intentions

Often wrongly understood, the quote means that the human being has often the tendancy to pretend his acts to be good, positive when it actually ends up in a total mess, by will or by accident (but often by will).
Copybot isn't something new but that's prolly one of the designers' biggest fears. You don't want to see your stuff copied and spread around when you spent time, energy and money, using your own skills to create something.
Some try to fight it by promoting real content, by adding spy scripts to their builds, by lowering the number of gifts they give out, by banning some viewers' users from their sims or simply by lowering their productivity.
But copybotters keep on surviving and we can regularly notice some catastrophes...
About two weeks ago, some designer I won't mention had the amazement to notice that some other designer was selling and giving out as a hunt gift some clothing that she had been designing one year before.
After taking contact with the reseller, she got told that he had been purchasing her clothing full perm on the marketplace for 1L and thought it was normal to resell it. He pretended that by innocence, he hadn't been noticing that the item was copybotted.
Do we have to fear that other designers copy our stuff ? Unfortunately, at some point yes.
It's not about being paranoid though. Most would never do that.
But more than I could tell, I've had the bad surprise to see some tattoos and piercings that looked exactly or nearly exactly like mine in different stores.
Let's make myself clear : yes, I can understand that it can happen that some people unconsciently reproduce something they saw somewhere without having any bad intention. It can also happen that they design something similar to you at the same time. It's not that much of a problem as long as stuff are talked over.
What is more disturbing is to see some stores in which most of the items seem to have been obviously copied from other (most of the time bigger or more "famous") stores' designs.
That leaves a bad taste in the mouth.
The road to hell is paved with good intentions.
Ironic story. Recently, someone noticed that a box full of full perm copybotted items was being sold on the marketplace for zero linden. The person had the good intention to warn people. All the day, the items' list was sent all around SL but also on Plurk, Facebook, Twitter, on groups. Good intentions. No one can blame it.
But what's a bit funnier is that some people found the "good" idea to send the box's marketplace link around.
HOW AMAZING so to see that the box had been bought, bought and bought again, whether it was by people wanting freebies (yay!) or just by designers who wanted to check if it contained some of their stuffs.
Some people even started sending the box to each other. The box was even sent by the "good intentioned" people mentioned before to the designers on the list...
So during all the day, the box was spread around, helping the copybotter to reach his aim, spreading his copybotted shitty stuff all around SL, like a virus.
See, ... That's why the road to hell is paved with good intentions.
If you find copybotted items of mine on the grid or the marketplace, warn me. Just me. Not all the grid. Cos if you start yelling it everywhere, it won't fall into deaf ears.
Just saying.
